How Do Burglars Get Through Locks and What Stops Them?
Most residential burglaries involve brute force rather than sophisticated lock picking. Kicking doors, breaking glass, and snapping cylinders account for the majority of forced entries. The most effective deterrents are reinforced strike plates, anti-snap cylinders, and door frames that can absorb impact. The image most people have of burglars involves elaborate lock-picking: a skilled operator working a tension wrench in the dark. The reality is far less cinematic. Understanding how doors and locks are actually bypassed is more useful than spending money on security theatre.
Brute Force: The Most Common Method
Kicking a door is the most frequent method of forced entry into Australian homes. It requires no tools, no skill, and no knowledge of the lock type. The weak point is almost never the lock: it is the strike plate and the door frame around it.
How the strike plate fails. Standard residential strike plates are fixed to the door frame with short screws (typically twenty-five to thirty millimetres) that grip only the thin timber of the door jamb rather than the structural framing behind it. A single well-aimed kick transfers enormous force through the door into this small fixing point. The screws pull through the jamb, the strike plate tears free, and the door swings open with the lock bolt still extended.

A heavy-duty strike plate with longer screws (seventy-five millimetres or more) reaching into the structural stud behind the jamb dramatically increases resistance. A kick that would open a standard door in one attempt may take five or more against a reinforced strike plate, by which point noise and time become significant deterrents for an opportunistic burglar.
Cylinder Snapping
Euro profile cylinders, the most common type in modern Australian door hardware, have a known vulnerability. If a cylinder protrudes more than a few millimetres beyond the door face, it can be snapped with a pair of adjustable pliers or a mole grip. Once the outer half of the cylinder breaks away, the exposed internals can be turned with a screwdriver.
Who uses this. Cylinder snapping became widespread in the UK as a burglary method before anti-snap cylinders became standard. It is less prevalent in Australia but not unknown, and it is fast: under thirty seconds with the right tool and a protruding cylinder.
What stops it. Anti-snap cylinders are manufactured with a sacrificial break point designed so that when force is applied, the outer section separates but the internal mechanism remains protected and the lock cannot be operated without the key. Keeping cylinders flush with or slightly recessed within the door furniture also reduces the gripping surface available.
Lock Picking
Picking a lock requires manipulating the pin stacks inside the cylinder to the shear line, one pin at a time, while applying rotational tension. In films it takes seconds. In reality, picking a quality residential cylinder takes minutes even for an experienced operator, and most burglars are not experienced operators.
When it is used. Picking is most likely in targeted, pre-planned burglaries where the perpetrator wants to enter without visible signs of forced entry. It is rare in opportunistic residential break-ins. A burglar choosing between picking a lock and kicking the door will almost always kick the door: it is faster, requires no skill, and the outcome is certain.
What stops it. Security pins (spool pins, serrated pins, and mushroom pins) inside the cylinder create false sets that defeat standard picking techniques. Cylinders rated to EN 1627 or carrying an Australian high-security rating contain these features as standard.
Lock Bumping
Bumping uses a specially cut key and a sharp impact to momentarily bounce the pins inside a cylinder above the shear line, allowing the cylinder to rotate. It is faster than picking and requires less skill, but the key must match the keyway profile of the target cylinder and the technique takes practice to execute reliably.
What stops it. Anti-bump cylinders use modified pin geometry (typically spring-loaded spool or serrated pins) that do not respond to the momentary displacement caused by bumping. Most quality cylinders sold in Australia now incorporate anti-bump features as standard.
Drilling
Drilling through a cylinder destroys the pin stacks and allows direct manipulation of the cam. It requires a drill and takes longer than other methods, generating noise and debris. It is typically used when other methods have failed or when the cylinder is otherwise inaccessible for snapping.
What stops it. Hardened steel anti-drill pins or plates inside the cylinder housing cause drill bits to skate away from the cylinder body. Purpose-built armoured cylinder escutcheons cover the face of the cylinder and protect it from drill access.
Glass and Secondary Entry Points
When a lock is genuinely good, burglars go around it. Breaking a glazed panel next to a door lock, reaching through, and turning the thumb-turn from the inside is faster and quieter than defeating a quality cylinder. Sliding doors, louvre windows, and poorly secured back doors are exploited in the same way.
What stops it.
Double cylinder deadbolts (keyed on both sides) prevent thumb-turn access through broken glass but create their own risks around emergency egress. Laminated glass in door panels resists breakage. Secondary locking on sliding doors and windows closes the routes around the main entry.
