Why Does My Key Stick in the Lock?
A key that sticks in a lock is usually caused by one of four things: a worn or poorly cut key, a dry or contaminated cylinder, debris inside the keyway, or a bent key that no longer aligns with the pin stacks. Sticking on the way in.
If the key resists entering the keyway, something is physically obstructing the path. This is typically debris that has worked its way into the cylinder, a burr on the key itself, or corrosion inside the keyway narrowing the channel. Foreign material inside a keyway is more common than people expect, particularly on external doors where dust, grit, and moisture reach the lock face.
Sticking on the way out.
If the key goes in smoothly but resists coming back out, the pins are not returning cleanly to their rest position. This points to worn springs, dried lubricant that has become gummy, or pin stacks that are binding in their chambers. It can also indicate that the key is slightly oversized relative to the cuts, holding pins fractionally higher than they should sit.
Sticking in both directions.
When the key is difficult in both directions, the cause is usually a combination of contamination and mechanical wear inside the cylinder. This tends to indicate that the lock is at a stage where cleaning alone may not resolve the problem completely.
The Four Most Common Causes
A worn or badly cut key.
Keys wear. Every insertion and rotation abrades the cut edges slightly, and after several years of daily use, a key no longer matches the original specification it was cut to. A worn key does not lift pins to the precise height required, causing binding and resistance. Keys cut as copies from an already worn key compound the problem, because the copy is cut to the worn dimensions rather than the manufacturer's original code.
A dry or contaminated cylinder.
Lock cylinders need lubrication, but the wrong lubricant makes the situation worse. Oil-based sprays applied to a cylinder attract airborne dust and form a sticky residue that binds pins rather than freeing them. Many keys that stick do so because a well-intentioned application of penetrating oil created a gummy film inside the mechanism. Graphite powder or a dry PTFE lubricant is the correct choice for lock cylinders.
Debris in the keyway.
Grit, sand, paint overspray, and fragments of a previously broken key can all lodge inside a keyway. A cylinder that has never been cleaned can accumulate a surprising quantity of material over a decade.
A bent key.

What Not to Do
Do not force it.
A key that requires force to insert or extract is under stress it was not designed to handle. Keys snap at the shoulder — the point where the blade meets the bow — and a snapped key inside a cylinder converts a minor annoyance into an emergency call-out.
Do not use pliers.
Gripping a stuck key with pliers to pull it out multiplies the force applied and dramatically increases the chance of the key breaking off inside the lock.
Do not use oil-based lubricant.
WD-40, penetrating oils, and general purpose sprays are the most common cause of secondary problems in lock cylinders. They provide short-term improvement followed by longer-term deterioration as the residue attracts dust.
How the Problem Is Resolved
A locksmith will typically start by examining the key itself against the manufacturer's specification. If the key is worn or bent, cutting a fresh key to the original code often resolves the issue entirely without touching the lock. This is the fastest and least expensive outcome.
If the key checks out, the cylinder is cleaned. This involves flushing the keyway to remove debris and residue, then applying an appropriate dry lubricant to the pin chambers. A cylinder that has never been serviced often improves dramatically from this alone.
